So we really need to get together because I'm dying to know how you did some of your effects! The glow around Ryan was from photoshop elements. Not sure if the steps are the same in regular photoshop- but its worth trying. (really easy)
make a new layer (ctrl j) press d to set foreground color to black. the press alt-backspace. dont worry, your screen is supposed to go black. then press m to get rectangular marquee tool. drag a section around your pic. go to select menu, choose feather, choose somewhere between 50 and 300 to soften your edges, play around till you get what you want. press backspace and voila! cool, huh? oh, and to make it not so dark go to the opacity meter in your layers menu (bottom right corner) and change the %, I think that pic of Ryan is about 25%. Good luck fello photo novice!!
